Cotton BMC Sport Air Filters are installed in the stock air filter box as a replacement for the original air filter. Made from high-performance materials that allow increased air flow to the engine compared to the original paper or sponge air filter, providing superior filtration efficiency: thanks to the combination of the different oiled layers, the containment of all impurities is guaranteed down to a minimum of 7 microns while the original paper filters usually go down to a minimum of 10 microns. BMC's cotton sport air filters are made using a process called "Full Moulding," which makes it possible to obtain the characteristic red filter from a single molding without requiring gluing in the corners, which causes easy breakage. The special rubber used in BMC filtration systems is virtually crushproof over time and has excellent adhesion characteristics to any airbox shape.

BMC air filters consist of a multilayer cotton fabric soaked in low-viscosity oil, sandwiched between two aluminum mesh structures. The aluminum meshes are treated with epoxy resin so as to protect them from oxidation caused by fuel vapors and moisture in the air. All BMC air filters are washable and regenerable using the special flushing kit, saving money on periodic filter replacement.
